Diagram It!

What to do with those logic games?

The Analytical Reasoning section, as it’s more formally referred to, has been the worst nightmare for many an LSAT test taker.  So, what’s the best approach?

The best thing you can do for yourself is draw a diagram to help organize the information.  You don’t have to be an artist to do this, it can be pretty straightforward.  The simplest ones are when you have to put a group of things in order like the first game from the June 2008 LSAT (Prep Test 57).  That had six activities that were going to be done in order.  So, for that you can just draw six columns labeled one thru six:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Something this simple will allow you to look at any scenario they throw out at you and more importantly, because there are six activities and six columns, it will be easier to determine what’s missing and what’s possible.

Next time, we’ll take a look at how to handle some situations where the diagram is not as obvious.

LSAT Scoring

So, a little bit about how the LSAT is scored.  It's actually much simpler than a lot of standardized test.  You get a question right, you get a point.  Get a question wrong and you get no points.  So, this brings up a couple of points:

1. Answer EVERYTHING!

The best way to go about this is to pick one letter and go with it for each of your blanks.  If you're lucky, you can pick up a ton of points this way.  But even on an off day, it's the best way to make sure you get a few more right answers and more importantly, you don't leave anything blank.

2. Law schools only see your LSAT score

This is important to keep in mind because they don't care if you got the hardest questions right.   You may be great at logic games but if you spend half the time on that section working on just the hardest one, it's going to hurt your score.  Find the easier questions and knock those out first, just rack up points!

Now, how do you know what's easier?  Well, a lot of that comes down to personal preference but in the coming weeks and months we'll go over a lot of different question types and talk about which ones are more naturally straightforward.  In the meantime, good luck in your studies...
